The holiday season is typically a beautiful time of year— and crazy busy.
Gifts. Dinners. Happy hours. Fun holiday events. Travels.
For me, December is like the end of a Metro ride in my hometown: It always pulls up faster than I expected.
November breezed by.
And October? I was just there.
So this year, I’m choosing to take some time to reflect on 2016 before the new year arrives.
And I hope you do, too.
What did 2016 bring you? How is life more fulfilling? What are we most grateful for?
Maybe some big life changes.
A big move to a new city.
Discovering a hobby.
Finding love — and embracing it.
Welcoming a new baby.
Creating a company.
Finding a new way to help others.
Making time for that awesome trip.
Buying a home.
Opening yourself up to a new, real friendship.
Or maybe it was a year you really don’t want to remember.
A year filled with loss, heartache.
Maybe it’s too painful to reflect on, because the pain is still too real.
There’s no doubt 2016 looks different for each of us.
But I believe there is something that we can all do.
And I promise that it only takes a few minutes.
Grab a pen and write down everything— anything — you’re grateful for in 2016.
Before the day is over, grab that piece of paper and scribble away!
Don’t judge yourself.
Think of big and small.
Write. Write. Write.
No worries if it’s messy.
The paper is ready and waiting— it won’t judge you.
From the heat in your home, to the pet that greets you lovingly, to the kind neighbors who watch over your kids — remind yourself of all you have.
You can place the list wherever it suits you best, from your private journal, to your family refrigerator, to the corner of your closet for safekeeping.
Or maybe you toss it out after you’re done!
I believe what matters most is that you took the time and space to acknowledge it.
After all, we certainly can’t predict the future.
But this I know for sure: The best way to say goodbye to 2016 is the best way to say hello to 2017—with gratitude.
